Chilliwack residents present at Annual UBC Scholars’ Day

Chilliwack’s second-year resident doctors showcased their research and academic flair at the recent UBC Scholars’ Day, held on May 6th at the Clarion Hotel and Conference Centre in Abbotsford.
This annual event marks a significant milestone, serving as one of the final academic requirements before these new physicians complete their two-year family medicine residency program.
For the first time, this year’s Scholars’ Day featured a unique collaboration that brought together resident doctors from across the eastern Fraser Valley region to present in a single forum jointly hosted by UBC, and the Chilliwack and Abbotsford Divisions of Family Practice.
Among the impressive array of projects from Chilliwack residents, the research conducted by Drs. Rui Yang Xu, Mandeep Grewal, and Habibur Rahman titled, “Screening for liver disease in primary care,” earned distinction by being recognized by judges as the standout presentation from the Chilliwack cohort.
Other residents also contributed compelling research to the day’s agenda, including Drs. Kelsey Summerhill and Adam Mesa, who collaborated with Dr. Xu on the use of family medicine boot camps to boost residency confidence and competence. Additionally, the team of Drs. Swati Shetty, Emmet Suttill, and Alyssa Zhao shared findings on improving informed consent processes for blood transfusions and thoracenteses.
The young doctors presented their findings to regional preceptors, other resident doctors, and staff from UBC, and the Chilliwack and Abbotsford Divisions of Family Practice. The event also featured presentations from Abbotsford-Mission residents, with topics ranging from social media fallacies to polypharmacy in older adults.
Each year, this forum allows residents to present a research project of their choosing, showcasing their work before they transition into the next stage of their medical careers.
