As a teaching community for UBC’s Family Practice Residency Program and the UBC Third-Year Integrated Community Clerkship, Chilliwack offers meaningful opportunities to contribute to medical education. Physicians can serve as preceptors for both programs and mentor Practice Readiness Assessment participants, internationally trained physicians completing a 12-week clinical assessment before a three-year return-of-service commitment in British Columbia. These roles allow physicians to share their expertise, support professional development, and strengthen a collaborative medical environment.

Chilliwack offers a rare opportunity to practice full-scope family medicine, including hospital work, within an interdisciplinary, collaborative network.
With 188 family physicians and nurse practitioners across the region, the provider community is large enough to support flexible care models, yet small enough that everyone knows your name. Full-scope care is the norm rather than the exception, with local hospital privileges available to support continuity of care. Many clinics also participate in call groups and mentorship networks, and the use of common EMR platforms helps make locum and coverage transitions more seamless for providers. Call groups provide evening and weekend coverage for you and your colleagues’ patients, supporting continuity of care within a collegial medical community.
Whether you want to focus on a specific area of family medicine or broaden your scope through opportunities such as surgical assists or shifts in specialized community clinics like the Chilliwack Youth Health Centre, you can shape a longitudinal practice that reflects your experience, interests, and career stage.
Inpatient Care
At Chilliwack General Hospital (CGH) and Fraser Canyon Hospital, family physicians care for their own admitted patients alongside specialists. Many start their day in the CGH doctor’s lounge, a space where connection and collaboration come naturally. These daily touchpoints help the formation of call groups, shared coverage, and strong local locum support. It’s a model built on trust, relationships, and real teamwork.
Maternity (COGS)
The Chilliwack Obstetrics Group (COGS) is a collaborative team of physicians and midwives providing comprehensive prenatal, intrapartum, and postnatal care. Serving families across the whole Division catchment, COGS attends to over half of the women delivering babies in Chilliwack. A new maternity clinic opening in 2026 at Chilliwack General Hospital will expand opportunities for care. The group welcomes physicians and midwives interested in exploring maternity care on a short-term basis, offering flexibility and support for those wanting to try this rewarding work.
Outreach Clinics
Family physicians and nurse practitioners in Chilliwack deliver care through community-based clinics operated in partnership with local organizations. These outreach clinics serve diverse populations, including the New Hope Health and Wellness Clinic, which supports individuals facing housing insecurity or complex social challenges, and the Gender Care Clinic, which provides affirming, comprehensive care for transgender and gender-diverse patients. Through the Anderson Creek Clinic in Boston Bar, providers support underserved communities and help ensure continuity of care close to home for patients with limited access. They also deliver youth-friendly primary care at the Chilliwack Youth Health Centre.
Long-Term Care
Family physicians and nurse practitioners in our region play a vital role in long-term care, providing medical oversight in any of the area’s nine facilities. Many longitudinal providers care for a cluster of residents and offer ongoing support through assessments, chronic disease management, medication reviews, and close coordination with interdisciplinary teams. It is work grounded in continuity and built on person-centered care.
Emergency Department
Physicians contribute to emergency care at both Chilliwack General Hospital (CGH) and Fraser Canyon Hospital (FCH). At CGH, ED physicians focus exclusively on emergency medicine, while in Hope, most family physicians also provide care in the FCH emergency department. This creates a rare blend of longitudinal and acute care within one connected role.
Urgent Primary Care
The Chilliwack Urgent and Primary Care Centre offers same-day appointments for medical needs that require prompt attention but are not life-threatening. It helps bridge the gap between emergency care and ongoing primary care, ensuring timely support when patients need it most.
Hospitalist
Family physicians can work as hospitalists at Chilliwack General Hospital, providing medical care to admitted patients under Health Authority contracts. Family practitioners may work full- or part-time as hospitalists alongside other areas of clinical practice.
Surgical Assists
Family physicians can incorporate surgical assisting as a component of their practice at Chilliwack General Hospital. This is part of the flexible practice options uniquely available in our region.

From your first day in Chilliwack, support is part of the package. The Division of Family Practice can provide clinic start-up and patient attachment support, guidance on hospital privileges, and introductions to practice opportunities in specialized areas of interest. New providers can also access mentorship through the First Five program and connect with peers through the NP Network.
